Pine Lake

Pine Lake is an awesome lake. My favorite thing to do there is the ten foot high dive. They also have a 20 and a 30 foot high dive there too. The 30 foot dive is really high and scary. The 20 foot is okay; I’ve gone on it before. They have a cable ride too. It is really similar to a zipline. At the end of the ride there is a tire, and you hit it and fall off into the water. They also have seven other slides. Three of the slides are for smaller kids. The four slides that are for bigger kids are fun. They have two racing slides, one mat slide, and one enclosed body slide. They also have a water teeter-totter. On the teeter-totter you rock back in forth until someone falls off or you get tired of rocking back in forth in the water. My second favorite thing is the bobber. It is a buoy with a bird nest on top of it. You rock back and forth until you hit the water or jump off. They also have a beach. It is meduim sized. You can play volleyball on it. They also have a play area for babies/ tiny kids to play on. There is a huge bucket that fills with water, and then it dumps it on you. They also have a playland under the bucket for little kids to climb on and play on. The times and hours are Monday-Saturday  10:oo AM – 8:oo PM  Sunday 12:00 PM – 8:oo PM. The prices are ages 4-9 $6.00 and ages 10 and up is $7.00. Plus if you have twenty or more people coming – you call in and you get one dollar off. They don’t accept credit cards at this time.

Have you ever jumped off a 20 foot high dive? Well, Pine Lake has one and they also have a 12 foot and a 30 foot. Also, they have 4 slides  one of which is a completely black slide which is really fun. Pine Lake has 2 racer slides which you can race on with your friend. The best slide though is a mat slide.  On the mat slide you grab a mat at the bottom and wait for the light at the top to turn green, but you want to make sure you hold on to the mat so you don’t flip around. If you have a baby you can put them on the kiddy slides and they don’t go very fast. There is a whole play land for little kids.  There are little slides, nets to climb on, water guns to shoot at people, and a huge bucket that dumps water on everyone in the area.  In the deep water there is a bobber – you climb up the ladder, sit in the nest, and rock back and forth.  Also in the deep water, they have a teeter-totter.  You try to rock your friend on the other end off of it.  In the shallower water they have “lilly pads” and a net to hold on to as you try to cross the water.  Finally, near the high dives is a zip line.  You travel about 50 feet before you hit a tire/bumper and fall off into the water.  There are lots of catfish in the water.  Be careful!  You should pack your lunch and go to Pine Lake.

Pine Lake is fun.  There are seven different slides to go on.  Two of the slides are racer slides.  You can race people on them.  There is a black tunnel slide.  You cannot see anything in it.  There is a raft slide.  You get a raft from the bottom, go up the stairs, and then when the light says go – go!  Be sure to hold onto the sides of the raft or you will turn around backwards.  There are two kiddie slides.  They are only about 8 feet tall.  There is a kiddie playground, and there is a slide there too.  There is a big bucket and when it falls it pours out a ton of water.  The water is chilly.  The water makes a river that goes back into the lake.  There are big squirt guns to squirt people with.  Near the black tunnel slide there are three high dives – a 10 foot, a 20 foot, and a 30 foot.  I only do the 10 foot high dive.  There is a zipline that is really fun.  You have to fall off before you hit the tire.  My favorite thing at Pine Lake are the lilly pads.  They are like fake logs that you jump across.  You also have a net above you to help you jump, jump, jump.  I don’t really like to use the net that much.  There is a buoy in the water to rock on.  I am not really old enough to do that.  There is another buoy teeter-totter.  You try to dunk your friend into the water on it.  At Pine Lake there is a paddle boat you can borrow to paddle around the lake.  There are catfish in the water and other little fish.  You can just swim around for fun.  We like to tail gate in the parking lot.  They will stamp your hand to come back in after you eat.  You should go to Pine Lake.

Marion Splash House

Marion Splash House is an awesome place to visit. My favorite thing to do there is the wave pool. They have a bunch of different waves they throw at you. Each round they do different patterns of waves – some are normal waves, some are off the side waves, some alternate high and low waves.  They also have three slides. They have a toilet bowl slide and two regular twisty slides. The two twisty slides are fun, but the toilet bowl slide really hurts your back.  The Splash House also has stuff for the younger kids. The splash pad is for kids that are 48 inches tall or less. The wave pool is for all sizes and all ages. There are at least two lifeguards at each pool. They also have a lazy river. You have to have a tube to go through it. There is a little swimming pool in the middle of the lazy river. You can get in there without a tube, but you then have to stay in there or get out. It also has two concession stands.

I think it is worth going sometime to the Marion Splash House.  The hours are Monday-Friday 11:00am – 6:00pm; Saturday: 11:00am – 9:00pm; Sunday: 12:00pm – 6:00pm.  It cost — regular: $5.00,  students: $4.00, seniors 55 & over: $3.00, children 2 and under: free, groups  (15 or more): $3.00/person.  It opens Memorial Day for the summer.

Have you ever been to a splash pad? Well, Marion Splash House is not a splash pad; it is a mix between a pool and a water park. The Marion Splash House has 3 water slides, two of the slides are racing slides, but riders don’t use tubes, the other slide doesn’t use a tube either, but is a toilet bowl. If you are not 48 inches tall, then you can’t go on the slides, but you can go on a kids water place that has a small slide. The Splash House has a lazy river.  In the middle of the lazy river is a pool for relaxing. My all time favorite there is the wave pool –  which is allowed for all ages and heights. When you are there, you don’t have to worry about your kid drowning there because they have a ton of lifeguards. The Marion Splash House is really worth your money.

Have you ever been to Marion Splash House? Well, there is a wave pool, the wave pool has a sensor for every 10 miutes to have waves come out.  It is very fun. They also have a lazy river.  There is a middle part where you can go without a tube, but in the lazy river you have to have a tube at all times. They have 3 big slides. Two slides are racing slides.  The other slide is toliet bowl,  and you don’t use a tube on this one either. They have a type of kids waterpark if you are not 48 inches tall.  You should go to the Marion Splash House because it is really fun.

Levi Coffin House — Fountain City, Indiana

John -12

Levi Coffin’s house is an awesome place to visit. It was part of the underground railroad. My favorite part of the house was the kitchen. The kitchen was in the basement. They had and indoor well. Levi built his house over a spring, and when he found out – he made a well there. The well would fill up after someone got a drink or took water out of it. The well would also move with drout and floods. The well is still crystal clear, so clear that it looks like there is no water in it. The kitchen was built right underneath the deck. Then, my second favorite thing was the upstairs bedroom. They hid the slaves there in a little door area that led into an attic crawl space. They also hid the slaves in their main attic. They had to hide 17 slaves in one night. The Levi Coffin house also has a shed outside in the back. It shows what the slaves would ride in and what the family would ride in.

I think that it is a good idea to go to the Levi Coffin House.  It is worth the money.  It cost $1.00 for kids, $2.00 for adults, and if you reserve it is $1.00 for every one. The hours are from 1pm-4pm from Tuesday to Saturday.  It is only open to the public from June 1-August 31.  From September 1-October 31 it is only open on Saturdays.  It is closed during the winter.

Have you ever heard of the Underground Railroad? Well, the Levi Coffin house was a part of it. The Underground Railroad is where the slaves try to get away from their owners. The slaves tried to get away because their owners would beat them and yell at them. So growing up in South Carolina, Levi Coffin saw a bunch of slaves tied together to be sold.  When he grew up he decided to do somthing about it.  Levi Coffin has helped over 2,000 slaves ecscape to freedom.  The next time your in Foutain City you should go to the Levi Coffin house; it is definitly worth your money.

Wilbur Wright’s Birthplace — Millville, Indiana

John — 12

One of the main things to see at Wilbur’s birthplace is the Wright house.  The Wright house was built-in the 1860’s. The house was one of my favorite parts. There was an upstairs and downstairs.  Their oven heated their whole house. Their restroom was outside (an outhouse), and at night you have to use chamber pots as your toilet. I personally think that it would start to smell bad at night. The bad part is if you were a kid you had to take the chamber pot out and clean it.  The house is just one of the many things to look at there.

My other favorite part was the museum it had a miniature street in it.  It is from 1900. It had the Wright’s bike shop, a barber shop, a general store, and it even had a small shopping center for clothes. My favorite thing about the museum was the miniature version of the Wright brother’s Kitty Hawk camp. It had all the stuff they would have brought with them from Indiana to North Carolina. They also had a replica of the Wright glider next to the camp.  Finally, there is even a video you can watch in the museum.

Visiting the Wilbur Wright Birthplace only costs $2.oo to get in. They have a visitor’s center where you can buy collectibles, books, and they also sell small-scale replicas.  This is an attraction worth going to see.

Barnett — 7

We went into the gift shop and paid to go take a tour.  It was a long tour (1 hour and 30 minutes).  First we got to see Wilbur Wright’s memorial.  Then we saw his house.  I liked seeing the toys he and his brothers played with – like a bow and arrow, rocking horse, and building blocks.  I liked seeing the baby’s dress in the cradle.  Then we went to the shed.  I liked learning facts about corn and the corn shucker.  The smoke house was next.  The outhouse was fun, and we got to sit in it.  You had to use newspaper and a corncob to wipe your bottom!  Then we went to the museum.  We saw an old fashioned town.  There was a fun model of the plane that you could lay on and steer.  The museum has a model of their camp at Kitty Hawk.  Wilbur and Orville did not have very much food and had to write the dates on the eggs to know when they were laid.  They slept up top in the barn and could not roll over or they would fall out of their beds to the floor below.  Everyone should go see this because it is interesting.  I learned a lot.

Mrs. Wick’s Pies/Restaurant — Winchester, Indiana

John (12), Hadley (10), and Barnett (7) —

At Mrs. Wick’s you will have some of the best pie you have ever tasted.  We have been there before to eat, but this time we just order pie – and lots of it!  Here is a list of what we ordered and thought about each piece:

Cherry Berry — It has two crusts, one on top and one on bottom.  Cherry Berry has cherries and red raspberries in it.  It is VERY tart.  The raspberries have seed, but the cherries don’t.  You can really taste the fruit.

Peanut Butter — Delicious!  It has whipped cream on top of a cream pie.  It also has nuts on top of the whipped cream.  The flavor is really rich.  Be sure to get there before it runs out.  It is very popular and when it is gone for the day – too bad.

Chocolate — It has whipped cream and chocolate shavings on top of a cream pie.  The flavor is very rich.  It has a lot of chocolatey flavor.  YUM!

Coconut — The pie has a meringue topping and toasted coconut on it.  It is a cream pie with lots of coconut in the pudding center.  The coconut tastes sweet, the pudding itself is plain.  It is chewy from all of the coconut inside.

Apple Walnut — It has a double crust – on top and bottom.  There are big chunks of apple with cinnamon in it.  There are only a few walnuts – so don’t be afraid to try it even if you don’t like nuts.  It is gooey between the apples and very sweet.  It would be great with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.

Lemon — It has a meringue on the top.  It tastes like a Lemon Head candy.  It is more sweet than you would expect it to be.  The level of tart is just the right amount; it is not as sour as the Cherry Berry pie!

Banana — Oh, my!  It is good!  It has a meringue topping.  There are big chunks of banana and banana pudding in it.  It is sweet and smooth.

Pecan — The top has a layer of pecans forming a hard (yummy) crust.  It has a caramel goo in the middle.  It is very sweet and could use whipped cream or ice cream to be number one.

Sugar Cream — This is the official state pie of Indiana!  It is smooth and creamy.  The burnt sugar flavor is richer than in the other cream pies.  It has a flavor of creme brulee.  It is one of everyone’s favorites.  You can buy an entire sugar cream pie to take home for just $5.00!

Peach — This pie just didn’t work for any of us.  It has a double crust and large slices of peaches.  It needs whipped cream or ice cream on it.  The goo inside was too sticky without much flavor.

Pineapple — Don’t knock it until you try it.  It has a whipped cream on top.  Inside is a vanilla pudding/cream center with chunks of crushed pineapple.  It is a pie that would be really good on a hot summer day.

Favorites:  peanut butter, banana, chocolate, apple/walnut, pecan, and sugar cream.

Least favorites:  peach and pineapple.

We suggest you get a big glass of cold milk to drink with your pie.  Our waitress Kim was super!  She never questioned why three kids got to eat 11 pieces of pie in one sitting.  She always gave us some interesting background and information on each pie.  You can buy Mrs. Wick’s pies at the grocery if you can’t make it to Winchester, Indiana.  It is a fun stop on a road trip across Indiana.

Square Donuts — Richmond, Indiana

Hadley — 10

Across the road from Clara’s Pizza King is a place called Square Donuts.  I personally think it is a funny name, but once you walk inside there are actually square shaped donuts.  The donuts taste the same as regular donuts.  They are good.  They have a great glaze on them.  It has a lot of sugar in it.  Not all of the donuts have holes in them.  The jelly filled donuts do not have holes.  They also have long rectangular donuts that do not have holes.  We bought 6 donuts for $3.90.  There is a special price if you buy a full dozen.  If I were you, I would go there because of the funny name and donuts.

Barnett — 7

At Square Donuts the donuts are really square.  It is kinda just across the street from Clara’s Pizza King.  We got donuts for breakfast.  They taste good because I like almost every kind of donut.  We got plain glazed donuts.  They were soft and squishy inside.  The outside tasted like sugar.  You could split a donut with someone and still have enought.  They are pretty big donuts.  Next time I want to try donut holes.

Clara’s Pizza King — Richmond, Indiana

John — 12

Clara’s Pizza King is a fabulous Pizza King. It has good food. I recommend getting the bread sticks. Their bread sticks are thin and cooked to perfection. I also recommend getting a pizza with sausage on it. If you don’t like sausage, then you’ll like it there because their sausage actually tastes more like hamburger than sausage. The largest pizza they have is 24 inches. I recommend getting a 16 in. that can feed at most 5 people. Their pizza has a thin crust and is cooked to a crisp. To get your food you call on an old payphone. You then tell them your seat number and order what  you want to eat and drink.  You order your drinks as one and they bring you a pitcher full of soda. The thing that is special about Clara’s Pizza King is that it has a real double-decker bus in it. You can only sit in the bottom part of the bus. You can call for reservations for the bus. It is a two-story tall building and has a very large parking lot. It is a great place to have a birthday party for younger kids and has a nice atmosphere.

Clara’s Pizza King is not like all the other Pizza Kings. The unusul part is Clara’s in Richmond, Indiana, has a double decker bus inside.  The way they got in there is they poured the cement, then pulled the bus in, and built around it. But, the food is the same. They have pizza and breadsticks. They have all the usual pizza toppings.  The sausage is like hamburger.  The crust is a mix of thick and thin.  The tomato sauce is not runny.  The pieces are cut into squares.  The breadsticks have a buttery sauce on top of them.  They are skinny and tasty.  The Pizza King has three stories: a basment, a main story, and a top level. If I were you, I would go.  Make sure when you go the bus is not reserved. The food is not really expensive, but still cost some money – compared to other pizza places.

Clara’s Pizza King is good.  They have the best pizza.  I like olives on it.  One olive was even whole!  The sausage is chopped up like hamburger.  It has good mushrooms too.  The breadsticks are very good.  They are skinny and just the right size.  Inside there is a double decker bus.  You could eat inside it, but it was reserved for a party.  We sat on the top level.  There are three levels in the restuaurant.  I like the decorations because they were hanging from the ceiling – like party beads.  People should go there because you would like it.
