Mrs. Wick’s Pies/Restaurant — Winchester, Indiana

At Mrs. Wick’s you will have some of the best pie you have ever tasted.  We have been there before to eat, but this time we just order pie – and lots of it!  Here is a list of what we ordered and thought about each piece:

Cherry Berry — It has two crusts, one on top and one on bottom.  Cherry Berry has cherries and red raspberries in it.  It is VERY tart.  The raspberries have seed, but the cherries don’t.  You can really taste the fruit.

Peanut Butter — Delicious!  It has whipped cream on top of a cream pie.  It also has nuts on top of the whipped cream.  The flavor is really rich.  Be sure to get there before it runs out.  It is very popular and when it is gone for the day – too bad.

Chocolate — It has whipped cream and chocolate shavings on top of a cream pie.  The flavor is very rich.  It has a lot of chocolatey flavor.  YUM!

Coconut — The pie has a meringue topping and toasted coconut on it.  It is a cream pie with lots of coconut in the pudding center.  The coconut tastes sweet, the pudding itself is plain.  It is chewy from all of the coconut inside.

Apple Walnut — It has a double crust – on top and bottom.  There are big chunks of apple with cinnamon in it.  There are only a few walnuts – so don’t be afraid to try it even if you don’t like nuts.  It is gooey between the apples and very sweet.  It would be great with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.

Lemon — It has a meringue on the top.  It tastes like a Lemon Head candy.  It is more sweet than you would expect it to be.  The level of tart is just the right amount; it is not as sour as the Cherry Berry pie!

Banana — Oh, my!  It is good!  It has a meringue topping.  There are big chunks of banana and banana pudding in it.  It is sweet and smooth.

Pecan — The top has a layer of pecans forming a hard (yummy) crust.  It has a caramel goo in the middle.  It is very sweet and could use whipped cream or ice cream to be number one.

Sugar Cream — This is the official state pie of Indiana!  It is smooth and creamy.  The burnt sugar flavor is richer than in the other cream pies.  It has a flavor of creme brulee.  It is one of everyone’s favorites.  You can buy an entire sugar cream pie to take home for just $5.00!

Peach — This pie just didn’t work for any of us.  It has a double crust and large slices of peaches.  It needs whipped cream or ice cream on it.  The goo inside was too sticky without much flavor.

Pineapple — Don’t knock it until you try it.  It has a whipped cream on top.  Inside is a vanilla pudding/cream center with chunks of crushed pineapple.  It is a pie that would be really good on a hot summer day.

Favorites:  peanut butter, banana, chocolate, apple/walnut, pecan, and sugar cream.

Least favorites:  peach and pineapple.

We suggest you get a big glass of cold milk to drink with your pie.  Our waitress Kim was super!  She never questioned why three kids got to eat 11 pieces of pie in one sitting.  She always gave us some interesting background and information on each pie.  You can buy Mrs. Wick’s pies at the grocery if you can’t make it to Winchester, Indiana.  It is a fun stop on a road trip across Indiana.

Square Donuts — Richmond, Indiana

Hadley — 10

Across the road from Clara’s Pizza King is a place called Square Donuts.  I personally think it is a funny name, but once you walk inside there are actually square shaped donuts.  The donuts taste the same as regular donuts.  They are good.  They have a great glaze on them.  It has a lot of sugar in it.  Not all of the donuts have holes in them.  The jelly filled donuts do not have holes.  They also have long rectangular donuts that do not have holes.  We bought 6 donuts for $3.90.  There is a special price if you buy a full dozen.  If I were you, I would go there because of the funny name and donuts.

Barnett — 7

At Square Donuts the donuts are really square.  It is kinda just across the street from Clara’s Pizza King.  We got donuts for breakfast.  They taste good because I like almost every kind of donut.  We got plain glazed donuts.  They were soft and squishy inside.  The outside tasted like sugar.  You could split a donut with someone and still have enought.  They are pretty big donuts.  Next time I want to try donut holes.

Clara’s Pizza King — Richmond, Indiana

Clara’s Pizza King is a fabulous Pizza King. It has good food. I recommend getting the bread sticks. Their bread sticks are thin and cooked to perfection. I also recommend getting a pizza with sausage on it. If you don’t like sausage, then you’ll like it there because their sausage actually tastes more like hamburger than sausage. The largest pizza they have is 24 inches. I recommend getting a 16 in. that can feed at most 5 people. Their pizza has a thin crust and is cooked to a crisp. To get your food you call on an old payphone. You then tell them your seat number and order what  you want to eat and drink.  You order your drinks as one and they bring you a pitcher full of soda. The thing that is special about Clara’s Pizza King is that it has a real double-decker bus in it. You can only sit in the bottom part of the bus. You can call for reservations for the bus. It is a two-story tall building and has a very large parking lot. It is a great place to have a birthday party for younger kids and has a nice atmosphere.

Hadley–10

Clara’s Pizza King is not like all the other Pizza Kings. The unusul part is Clara’s in Richmond, Indiana, has a double decker bus inside.  The way they got in there is they poured the cement, then pulled the bus in, and built around it. But, the food is the same. They have pizza and breadsticks. They have all the usual pizza toppings.  The sausage is like hamburger.  The crust is a mix of thick and thin.  The tomato sauce is not runny.  The pieces are cut into squares.  The breadsticks have a buttery sauce on top of them.  They are skinny and tasty.  The Pizza King has three stories: a basment, a main story, and a top level. If I were you, I would go.  Make sure when you go the bus is not reserved. The food is not really expensive, but still cost some money – compared to other pizza places.

Barnett— 7

Clara’s Pizza King is good.  They have the best pizza.  I like olives on it.  One olive was even whole!  The sausage is chopped up like hamburger.  It has good mushrooms too.  The breadsticks are very good.  They are skinny and just the right size.  Inside there is a double decker bus.  You could eat inside it, but it was reserved for a party.  We sat on the top level.  There are three levels in the restuaurant.  I like the decorations because they were hanging from the ceiling – like party beads.  People should go there because you would like it.

Popeyes Louisana Kitchen

Popeye’s sells one of the best fried chickens.  You can pick between spicy and mild seasonings.  I usually get the mild fried chicken wings.  One of my favorite sides is the red beans and rice.  The beans are mashed instead of whole and make a gravy over the rice.  My second favorite side is mashed potatoes.  I really love the cajun spicy gravy.  The sweet tea is one of the best teas I have ever had (except for Teavana, but that is for another day!).  The employees are always nice and never rude.  There is not a Popeye’s in our area, so when we travel we are always sure to look for one.  Four Stars!
